The nine volumes of The Dread Archive side by side

The Dread Archive by J.H.M. Bandeira is a series of nine volumes of literary horror, ninety stories in total, about the places, machines and traditions that keep remembering long after everyone has stopped watching. Each volume collects ten stories around one setting, and each can be read on its own. That makes the hardest question simply: where do you begin?

If you like seasonal horror

  • Wintertide Chill (Volume 1): winter and Christmas. Carolers after midnight, forgotten toys that remember their makers, snow that preserves what should have disappeared.
  • Halloween After Midnight (Volume 2): houses that appear only on October 31, pumpkin fields that should never be harvested, masks that remember every face that wore them.

If you like a strong sense of place

  • The Long Night (Volume 4): the Nordic north, from a village waiting for a sun that does not return to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
  • The Quiet Ones (Volume 6): Japan. An apartment, a village, a department store, a ryokan, a theater, a foundry. No jump scares, no gore, just the horror of things left unfinished.
  • The Land Remembers (Volume 7): land and water. Ordinary sites of ordinary disasters, where something underneath is still keeping score.
  • Forgotten Exorcisms (Volume 8): ten countries, from a Sicilian confessional to a flooded Portuguese valley.

If you like the uncanny in the familiar

  • The Unfinished People (Volume 5): the everyday world. A smart home learning what makes you stay, a relative no one in the family can name.
  • The Dark Between Stars (Volume 3): space. A signal that answers a question no one expected to be heard, an ocean beneath Europa’s frozen surface.
  • Into the DMT World (Volume 9): ten stories inspired by documented psychedelic experiences.

Our suggestion

Start with the volume whose setting pulls you in most, then follow the mood. If the quiet, slow-burning stories of The Quiet Ones are your thing, The Land Remembers is a good next step. If you are here for the season, read Wintertide Chill and The Long Night back to back.

Every volume is available as paperback and Kindle eBook. All covers and descriptions are on the Dread Archive page.
